What to Check on a Used-Car Test Drive
A test drive is your chance to assess the car as a complete machine and decide whether it suits you. Arrange the visit in advance, bring your driving licence and allow enough time to check the vehicle before and after driving.
Before starting the engine
Check the driving position, mirrors, seat adjustment, visibility and basic controls. With the ignition on, warning lamps should illuminate as designed and then extinguish appropriately after starting. Do not ignore a warning light because the car appears to drive normally.
Start from cold where possible
A cold start can reveal noises or starting behaviour hidden by a warmed engine. Listen for persistent rattles, uneven running or excessive smoke. Some condensation from the exhaust can be normal in cool weather; anything concerning should be investigated.
Check the clutch or automatic gearbox
A manual clutch should operate progressively without obvious slipping or judder. An automatic should select drive and reverse predictably and change gear smoothly for its design. Test low-speed manoeuvring as well as normal acceleration.
Steering, brakes and suspension
On a safe route, check that the car tracks predictably and the steering responds consistently. Braking should feel controlled without severe vibration or pulling. Listen for knocks over uneven surfaces and check that the car settles normally afterwards.
Comfort and everyday usability
Can you see clearly at junctions, read the instruments and reach the controls? Test heating, demisting and air conditioning. If the car will carry children, luggage or work equipment, inspect the relevant space and access before deciding.
Stop and inspect again
After the drive, look beneath the car for fresh leaks, check for unusual smells and confirm no warning lamps have appeared. Ask about anything you noticed and make sure agreed answers or repairs are recorded in writing.
